The Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti or 'GSDS' was once popular and known as the 'Birla House' or 'Birla Bhavan. ‘It is strategically situated at 5, Tees January Margaka as '30 January Road.' It was the hapless day when National Leader of Freedom, Mahatma Gandhi Ji was stayed by the Hindu fanatic. The Smriti is situated at a comfortable distance of few kilometers from the Connaught Place in Central Delhi. The memorable monument can be easily reached through the local transportation. Tourists can also take the metro and get down at the Rajiv Chowk Metro station.

The Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti or 'Remembrance of Gandhi and Visiting Centre' came up as the independently held museums in the year 1984. The Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti are supervised financially as well as administratively by Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Prime Minister, holding the office is the chairperson of Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti. There are also many senior representatives from various offices of Government of India associated with Gandhian Centre that work under various departments of the Government of India and help in coordinating the activities. It is significant to point here that Gandhian Center has two important sections - 'The Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti' and 'The International Centre of Gandhian Studies and Research'.

The establishment of Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti Museum done with the very objective of advertising and offering a sound knowledge platform on the life, works, mission and vision of Gandhi Ji by means of educational, cultural and social events and programs held regularly under the aegis of Samiti. Taking the references from past, Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti Museum was considered to be a Huge Mansion of distinguished Indian Business Head, 'Birla' who was known internationally. The last 144 days of Mahatma Gandhiji’s life were spent in this very Mansion. The days were from 9th September 1947 up till the 30th January 1948. It was the 30th of January 1948 that Gandhiji was assassinated and he breathed his very last in the front courtyard of the building after he came out to meet the followers to accept his greetings. The government of India underwent formal acquisition procedures of the Mansion from 'Birla' in the year of 1971 and after acquiring the place has installed a Martyred Pillar Column at the very point where Mahatma was assassinated.

The complete Mansion has been converted into Museum and has been dedicated to Mahatma Gandhiji. The Mansion was opened to public from 15th August 1973 – which is the Independence Day of India.

The office bearers of the Gandhi Smriti took faultless procedures to keep the Mansion is maintained state as it was in the year 1948. The room where Gandhi Ji lived for 144 days has also been well kempt. Furthermore, the place where Gandhiji offered his prayers along with his followers before the assassination is also kept preserved. In the year 1995, hi tech 'Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum' also came under the operation. It is one of the revered places for Indians and a happening tourist spot indeed.
